Oxidation of tragacanth gum

The oxidation reaction with NaIO₄⁻ results in C2-C3 bond cleavage between adjacent hydroxyl groups (Scheme 1), disrupting the rigid molecular backbone of TG and increasing its structural flexibility²¹ (Scheme 1).
